5 Smart Packing Hacks to Make Your Move Go Smoother

Having a strategy is key when you’re moving. Packing items takes time, but unpacking is so much easier when you already know where things are supposed to go. If you’re looking for a couple of tips from the experts on how to pack so that your move goes smoothly from start to finish, then check out these five hacks.

Declutter

The first step to any move is to start decluttering early in the process. You can start this process several months in advance if you know you’ll be moving soon. Packing things that you no longer use is just a waste of time during the move out and move in process. Go room by room to sort out items you no longer need or items that are broken. Clothing is a good place to start. For instance, ask yourself if you wore a certain pair of pants in the last year. If the answer is “no,” then get rid of them.

Take Things to Storage

When you want to make packing right before the move easier, take the things that you won’t immediately want in your new house to storage. You can combine this step with the first one. Make a pile of all of the things that you’ll want later at some point, and then take them to a storage unit. Depending on whether or not you already have a storage unit and how much space you need, you might want to do this a month in advance.

Pack the Boxes and Truck Strategically

You might be able to get away with using a smaller moving truck if you plan ahead and pack it strategically. You’ll also want to pack similar items together when packing boxes so that unloading is easier. When packing the truck, make sure that you load things in a way that they’ll be safe for travel. For example, furniture pieces should have moving blankets in between them so that items don’t get scuffed.

Keep an Inventory of Valuables

Before you load things in the truck, make sure you know where you’re keeping valuables, such as jewelry. Small items can get lost during packing and travel, so make sure you find a special place for these things. You’ll also feel better when you’re unpacking if you make a list of everything that you packed up so that you can tick them off as you’re unpacking.

Label Boxes

Unpacking is easier when you and anyone helping you move can simply look at a box and put it in the correct room. You can use color coding or just write the room on the side of the box. Whatever you choose to do, make sure you are consistent and that you remember what your system is.

Packing can take time, but it goes a lot quicker when you’ve taken the time to prepare. Set up an itinerary a month or two in advance, and then moving day will go much smoother.
